Creating a Digital Twin of the Shiplift at HMAS Coonawarra

by Jacqueline Clarke, Director of Communications

Recently, our Executive Directors Dave Walter and Paul Sheather – both experienced engineers with decades of experience – travelled to Darwin to lead a cutting-edge digital engineering initiative.

Secora was engaged by the Naval Engineering Branch to undertake a high-resolution 3D scan of the Shiplift at HMAS Coonawarra, with the objective of creating a digital twin of the structure. This digital replica is more than a visual model – it’s a strategic tool designed to enhance decision-making and asset sustainment planning.

The Navy’s need was clear: create a shared, accurate picture of the Shiplift that can be accessed and understood by multiple stakeholders. The solution had to be delivered efficiently and pragmatically – without compromising on precision or utility.

With their technical expertise and hands-on approach, Dave and Paul tackled the challenge of generating a robust and practically useful digital model – one that supports operational readiness and long-term asset stewardship.

This project reflects our commitment to delivering engineering solutions that go beyond the theoretical. We're proud to support Defence with tools that make a real impact on the ground – and in this case, at sea.
